A world of colour at the Glasgow Mela

Scotland’s biggest multicultural festival — still going strong after 24 years — runs Saturday and Sunday at Kelvingrove Park, with headline acts including the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Dhol Foundation and big name Bhangra acts Sukshinder Shinda and Jaz Dhami.

And, as well as the big names, there are performances throughout the weekend — from local dance groups, musicians and even acrobatic and circus acts.

Southside councillor Soryia Siddique, chair of the organising committee, said: “Glasgow Mela has long celebrated the many cultures that strongly influence everything about the city and its people — those celebrations will continue when we bring the Mela magic to Kelvingrove Park.”

The Mela may depend on the weather (we’ve all seen glorious weekends of sunshine, as well as those wet and wild washouts) but whether there’s a spit of rain or not, it’s all about grabbing some grub, catching an act or two and then finishing it off with a kulfi ice.

There’s face painting and Bollywood-style makeovers — andHillhead’s Grosvenor Cinema is in on the act too, offering a marquee screening Bollywood films throughout the weekend.

The whole festival is tied up with the Culture 2014 programme for the upcoming Commonwealth Games — and with all that colour, song and dance on the go, it will no doubt be a fitting tribute to cultures near and far.
