The Volkswagen Polo has been revealed as the country’s cheapest car to maintain in a comparison of the UK’s best selling models.

Online garage marketplace WhoCanFixMyCar.com examined more than 300,000 data points for the best selling hatchbacks in the country and found that on average the German supermini was cheaper than models from Ford, Vauxhall and others within the VW family.

Looking at the most common repair jobs, the average garage bill for the Polo was £214.05. The Ford Fiesta – the country’s best selling car – was the second cheapest at £230.07, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa at £238.21.

The study looked at hatchback models from Ford, Vauxhall and VW, which make up half of the country’s most popular car list. Between them the Fiesta, Golf, Focus, Corsa and Polo take five of the top six spots for vehicle registrations in 2018, with total registrations of 212,828.

Unsurprisingly, the larger models from all three brands are consistently more expensive to repair than their smaller stablemates, with the Golf costing £52.50 more than the Polo on average. In contrast, the average Focus (£250.94) and Astra (£260.64) repairs were around £20 more than on the smaller models from the same brand.

There is around £20 difference in the repair costs between Ford’s Fiesta and Focus

Alistair Preston, Co-Founder of WhoCanFixMyCar.com, said: “We decided to compare the best selling hatchbacks because often drivers struggle to decide which model to purchase. The cost of maintenance is increasingly becoming a larger factor in the purchasing decision, so we believe it’s useful to know which of the UK’s popular hatchbacks are the most expensive to maintain.

“Although it’s pretty tight between the brands in terms of average maintenance cost, there are some big differences when you look a little closer. The difference between the Golf and Polo is vast, something to consider if you can’t choose between the two models. Vauxhall come out expensive on some of the larger repair jobs too, so depending how old the vehicle is that you are purchasing you could get some unexpected repair bills.

The study found that the Volkswagen models are more expensive on average for routine maintenance such as car batteries, brake pad replacements and servicing. But Vauxhall was revealed as the most expensive manufacturer for larger repair jobs such as clutch replacement, head gasket and gearbox repairs. A Vauxhall gearbox repair is 27 per cent more expensive than Ford and 17 per cent more expensive than Volkswagen.
