Singing for someone else’s supper

The Newton Mearns school has been working with Pop Connection, a charity which helps children record their own CD and launch it at a community concert, in aid of a local cause.

The youngsters mesmerised more than 700 parents, teachers and friends at two performances in Newton Mearns baptist church recently, singing seven songs from their debut LP.

The event was part of a wider church project, currently raising £10,000 for homeless charity Glasgow City Mission.

Head teacher Fiona Loudon explained: “Many of our pupils were surprised to learn that just a few miles away, there are people who are hungry and living in poverty.

“The pupils at Crookfur primary are keen to show they care by playing their part. Not only is the Pop Connection project great fun, it provides a fantastic opportunity to help our community and make a difference to the lives of other people”.

Andrew Low, chief executive of Glasgow City Mission, added: “We’re so grateful for the Pop Connection project. It’s great to see children getting excited about making a difference.

“The money Crookfur primary has raised is going straight to those who need it most in our city.

“It will allow us to feed thousands of men and women this winter, and serving food often acts as a starting point in working with our clients to help them turn their lives around”.
