Getting back to nature at Merkland

MERKLAND Conservation Volunteer Group has launched an appeal for volunteers.

Merkland Local Nature Reserve, in Kirkintilloch, is a haven for wildlife and is popular spot for people looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town.

The conservation group volunteers meet one Saturday a month to take part in a variety of tasks such as tree felling, path and fence maintenance, litter picking and wildlife surveys.

If you would like to help go along to the Merkland car park, just off Merkland Drive, at 10.30am on any of these days throughout 2011: January 22, February 26, March 26, April 23, May 28, June 18, July 23, August 13, October 22, November 26 and December 17.

Those aged 16 or under should be accompanied by an adult and you should wear old clothes and strong footwear.

No experience is necessary as all training and tools are provided by East Dunbartonshire and Mugdock Country Park Ranger Service.
