A total of 12 teams took part in the event, held at Biggar Rugby Club, and the top three in each section went forward to the West Area finals at Lesmahagow Show last weekend, at which the Biggar Club was victorious.

In the county champs, Biggar also came out top in the gents section. The club is known for its training and last year it won the national final at the Highland Show. Under the rules it must field a different team this year.

“It was a very, very good turnout, especially for the girls,” said Mhairi Lake, assistant secretary of the Carluke Club.

“There are a lot of new members taking part: Avondale had two girls teams, which is really impressive, but Carluke had new members and so did Biggar.”
