An adventurous mechanic from Torrance is gearing up to drive 2500 miles from Scotland to Barcelona in a banger worth just £200.

Christopher Henderson (22) is going the distance to raise money for the Marie Curie Hospice in Huntershill.

The Vauxhall Astra estate car has done over 200,000 miles and was recently re-designed by two kids from a primary school in North Lanarkshire.

Christopher said: “They chopped a few bits off and added a few bits on. It’s bonkers looking.”

He has always loved cars and knew he had to take part when he heard about the rally.

He said: “It was a spur of the moment idea, we just decided to go.

“I’ve always been interested in cars, ever since I was a wee boy.”

Both the co-driver, Kevin McSorley and Christopher have experienced first hand what Marie Curie can do to support a family and are happy to be able to raise funds for this cause.

Christopher explained: “My uncle was in Marie Curie in 2013 and I saw all the important work that they do so it’s good to give something back to them.”

The duo set off on Wednesday, May 20, and join the other daring motorists in Calais where they will kick off their journey to Barcelona.

Rally organiser, Gavin Foulkes, said: “The motivation is always greater if they have a personal connection to the cause they are raising awareness for.”

He said 80 teams have signed up for the rally but sometimes the bangers don’t have the juice to make it all the way.”

Having taken part in the rally previously, Gavin says his favourite part is at the start.

He said: “The highlight is watching the weird and wonderful cars arriving at the start line.

“Most teams keep it a secret until this point. It’s amazing to see the creativity, imagination and level of detail some of these teams put into their cars.

The dedicated drivers will make stops across the continent in Paris, Bordeaux, Biarritz and Andorra.”

He added: “We’ll take in as many of the sights as possible and will be back in Glasgow on the Wednesday - if we make it.”

Over the five days, and in the run up to the rally, Christopher and Kevin hope to raise £500 for Marie Curie Hospice in Huntershill.
