A football magazine editor and part-time writer has taken inspiration from his love of the written word for his latest book.
Paul Cuddihy (47), from Bishopbriggs, heads up the Celtic View team at Parkhead, where he has been editor since 2001.
The dad-of-two, who attended Turnbull High School, has written and edited several football books, as well as publishing a trilogy of thrillers in recent years.
But his latest project, called ‘Read All About It’, is a whole new type of book - recording a year of lapping up literature.
He explained: “At the end of 2012 I made a resolution to read more books from my ever-expanding collection.
“My daughter was doing a reading diary at university which gave me the idea about two months into the year.
“I’ve written about the experience - the books I’ve read, what I thought about them, as well as other things that were going on in my life and in the world of literature.”
Over the year Paul read a total of 71 books, from classics like ‘Pride and Prejudice’ to the complete shortlist of the 2013 Booker Prize.
He told the Herald: “It was all about rediscovering the joy of reading and my love for books.
“It meant I cut out a lot of the things that you sometimes feel guilty about - like watching television - and enjoying a book instead. That’s not to say that I don’t still enjoy watching television!”
“I hope it may encourage people to read some of the books I’ve written about.”
‘Read All About It’ also marks the first time Paul has self-published a book, a process he describes as “exhilarating”.
He explained: “It really feels like it’s your book.
“I laid it out myself, designed it with the help of a friend, and now it’s available to order online. I was really impressed with the quality of the end product.
“There are drawbacks, like having to do your own publicity and promotion, but I’ve enjoyed taking part in events like World Book Night in Kirkintilloch Library.”
Now Paul is in the process of deciding where his writing will take him next - with one intriguing idea being “a collection of short stories based on the titles of ‘Duran Duran’ songs”. Watch this space.
