Building for the future in Hillhead

Community groups have had their first look of an eagerly-awaited new community centre ahead of its official opening.

The keys to the new £2.7million Hillhead Community Centre were handed over to East Dunbartonshire Council last week.

The former centre, which had stood on Meiklehill Road for over 80 years, was very popular with a range of community groups.

The facility will be officially opened in September but last week community groups and organisations were offered the chance to see inside to find out what will be on offer.

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie, who joined community group leaders on one of the tours of the new building, said: “The council has worked closely with local people to get to this point and it’s fantastic to see this much-needed facility now finished.

“The community centre is a modern and vibrant building that will provide user groups and the wider community with excellent facilities.

“The council hopes this will be an important social centre for the people of Hillhead and it was encouraging to hear so many positive comments from members of the community as I toured the building with them.

“There will be an official opening in September and we look forward to welcoming the community along to join in the celebrations.”

A number of groups and organisations have already come forward looking to use the facility after it is officially opened.

However, plenty of opportunities still remain for community groups to let the centre’s many meeting rooms and hall.

The community centre will be open from 8am-9pm Tuesday and Thursday with extending opening until 9.30pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Councillor Geekie added: “We have listened to feedback from the community and the centre will also be open at the weekend and available for a broad range of community activities between 10am-5pm on Saturday and 12-4pm on Sunday.”
