Bumper boost for sport

SPORTY pupils at an East Dunbartonshire school could soon have a new all-weather pitch to play on. Plans to create an all-weather playing field at Lenzie Academy have been given the green light by councillors.

Funding for the new sporting facility has been earmarked in East Dunbartonshire Council’s capital programme for 2012/13.

Similar pitches were built at the new St Ninian’s High, Bishopbriggs Academy and Turnbull High School.

Lenzie Academy is one of only two non Public/Private Partnership secondary schools in East Dunbartonshire.

Councillor Gillian Renwick said: “When the PPP schools were proposed before 2007, parents were told Lenzie Academy would not lose out, however, it looked as if they were going to be left out in the cold.

“It’s been a real fight, but I think it’s fantastic news.”

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “This project would see a £300,000 investment into the development of the sports pitch and I’m sure that it would bring great benefits to the pupils at the academy and the local community.”
