LONG-awaited social housing will be available in Lenzie and Bishopbriggs next year.

East Dunbartonshire Council recently handed over the keys to four new homes in Bearsden – the first council houses to be built locally in the past 20 years.

Work is currently underway on more new-build council homes in other areas of East Dunbartonshire.

Due for completion in January 2012, Oak Drive in Lenzie will provide 15 one and two-bed cottage flats and close-entry flats for rent.

In addition, the council recently approved a planning application for 41 properties at Crowhill Road, Bishopbriggs – 23 of which will be new council homes for rent.

These will bring together a range of one, two and three-bed cottage flats and close-entry flats – likely to be completed in July 2012.

Councillor Amanda Stewart, convener of the housing and communities committee, said: “Availability of affordable quality housing is a key driver in helping to retain young people and families to stay in East Dunbartonshire and this marks a huge step forward in our aim to increase the number of affordable rented houses in the area.”
