Dark comedy offers a first step to stardom

An acting student has landed his first professional lead role in an award winning dark comedy “A Bench at the Edge.”

Andrew Davies (19), from Lenzie, has just completed a HNC in acting and performance at City of Glasgow College and secured the role of Man 2, an anonymous character, in the abstract production with Crossfade Theatre group.

He said: “It’s quite uplifting, it makes you sort of take a step back from reality but because it’s a dark comedy it’s not completely heavy handed.”

The one act play was performed at Govanhill Baths between Thursday, June 11, and Saturday, June 13, and was the first venture for Crossfade Theatre, which is run by a group of recent graduates.

The former Lenzie Academy pupil hopes to go to drama school in the near future and will try to get as much experience as possible by working as an extra for films.

The venue was recently converted into a theatre after it was closed down over a decade ago.

It was the last surviving Edwardian public bathhouse and was closed down in 2001.

“It’s really run down and falling apart but it adds to the atmosphere, it gives it an authentic feel,” he said.

Andrew also appeared at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
