SHINING stars at a Kirkintilloch school take centre stage in this week’s Herald (June 13, 2012).

The youngsters were in the midst of celebrating The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee when the Herald visited them for our School of the Week feature – with loads of great pictures.

Jubilee gems and badges have been made and sold by a number of pupils, raising £150 for the school so far.

A Diamond Jubilee assembly and garden party was also held, with pupils choosing their very own Queen from primary two and a Duke of Edinburgh from primary one.

It has, however, been business as usual at the school, with pupils continuing with their usual activities.

The annual health week was also being held when we visited the school, giving youngsters a chance to learn more about healthy eating and exercise.

The pupils got to sample street dance, pro judo, golf, Zumba, yoga and much more during the event.

The gardening club continue to meet most lunchtimes during the week. Pupils who are members dig out all the weeds, water daffodils and even plant new flowers.

Children who take part in the gardening club and help out also earn points.

Gartconner also has an eco committee, whose members are working hard to achieve the school’s second Green Flag.

Most of us might remember maths at school as being a very boring subject, but pupils at Gartconner certainly won’t.

The kids are involved in active maths learning, which allows them to apply the subject to real life, for example managing a shopping budget.

The school also has a nursery attached, where pupils are learning all sorts of things and enjoy a variety of activities.

Pupils will finish the school year in style by holding an Olympics Concert on June 20.

The concert will involve pupils singing songs from their chosen country and each class will do a special dance.

They will perform for proud mums and dads before heading off to enjoy the summer hols.

See this week’s Herald for the full feature.
