A new primary school is set to open its doors to pupils earlier than expected, with classes getting underway following the 2016 summer holidays.
Contractors have managed to make an early start on the new £11.5m primary school and nursery school in Lenzie.
It is being delivered in partnership with hub West Scotland as part of the Council’s Primary School Improvement Programme (PSIP) on the existing Lenzie Moss Primary School site.
The school will replace the existing Lenzie Moss Primary and Lenzie Primary schools.
The new school is designed to support the on-going implementation of Curriculum for Excellence with flexible, open, learning spaces that support the many different approaches to learning including class teaching, project work and individual learning.
Some of the features include classrooms with LCD touchscreens, Wi-Fi throughout the building, multi-use games area in the grounds, covered outdoor learning areas and small and large group work spaces.
As a result of the accelerated construction of the school building, the 3G pitch within the schools playground will also be delivered ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed by Christmas 2016.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “This is great news for the community in Lenzie as the demolition of the old Lenzie Moss school building can now begin during the school holiday period which will reduce disruption to the operation of the new school during term time.”
She added: “It has been really exciting watching the development of the new school and seeing the building starting to take shape.
“The children I have spoken to are really excited about it and I am sure they will all be pleased to get in earlier than they anticipated.”
The new primary school in Lenzie will be the second to be built as part of the council’s Primary School Improvement Programme (PSIP).
It is receiving £5m funding through the Scotland’s Schools for the Future programme, managed by the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) on behalf of the Scottish Government. The first PSIP school, Lairdsland Primary School in Kirkintilloch, officially opened in May this year.
