It will be one of the busiest weekends of the year, as thousands of students take to bars and clubs to celebrate their first year at university or college – but Glasgow’s licensed trade is urging people to look out for each other.

The Best Bar None Glasgow scheme works to promote safe practice in local venues, and from experience publicans know that the traditional new-start students’ “early Hogmanay” can put inexperienced drinkers in danger.

It has produced a video which shows just how easy it is to be “a bystander” when things go wrong – and is urging students to tell bar staff or call the police if they see something they think is not right, with the message: “Don’t assume someone else will”.
