EMOTIONAL tributes have been paid to a brave soldier who was killed while on duty in Afghanistan.

Captain Walter Barrie, from Auchinloch, was playing in a game of football between British and Afghan soldiers when he was shot at close range.

Captain Barrie (41) was a former pupil of Auchinloch Primary School and Lenzie Academy.

He joined the Army 25 years ago. His family described him as a “great guy, who died doing a job he loved”.

His wife, Sonia, said: “He was a great man, a doting and amazing father and a fantastic husband.”

See this week’s Herald for the special tribute to Captain Barrie from his wife and family.
