FIREFIGHTERS were called out to tackle a blazing derelict building after blazes were started in two flats by vandals.

Around 15 firefighters from Springburn and Calton stations rushed to the blaze, in Fountainwell Road, in Sighthill, on Thursday at around 10.15pm.

The fires had been deliberately started in bedrooms of properties on the third and fourth floors of the maisonette building.

The blaze was brought under control within an hour, but fire crews remained at the scene for up to four hours.

Kevin Smyth, watch commander at Springburn Fire Station, said: “Deliberately setting a fire is dangerous not just for fire crews, but for the people that are doing it.

“We had problems accessing the flats because of the smoke. Those who set these fires may not have been able to get down the stairs.”

He added: “This also takes resources away from other incidents.”

The building is due to be demolished as part of the regeneration of Sighthill.

Meanwhile, firefighters were called to tackle 19 blazes during Bonfire Night.
