Footage of Lenzie woman in Peru drugs arrest

The moments after a young woman from Lenzie was arrested in Peru on suspicion of drug trafficking has emerged on video footage.

Melissa Reid (19) and Michaella McCollum Connolly (20) were arrested in Lima a week ago while trying to board a flight to Madrid.

The National Police of Peru said they found more than 24lb of cocaine - thought to be worth around £1.5 million - hidden in food in the luggage of the two women.

In the online video, Ms Reid is questioned by a police interviewer and is heard to say: “I was forced to take these bags in my luggage.”

When asked if she knew they contained drugs, she said: “I did not know that.”

Ms Reid and Ms McCollum Connolly both left home for separate holidays in Ibiza earlier this summer.

Ms Reid’s mother, Debra, is reported as saying she thought her daughter was in Ibiza with friends and had no idea she had travelled to Peru.

The women are said to be in custody in a police station in Lima.

East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson said: “I was deeply concerned to hear of the arrest of Melissa Reid in Peru.

“Naturally, this is a very distressing time for Melissa and her family, who are of course worried about her welfare.

“I have sought reassurances from the Foreign Office that the family are receiving ongoing support, both here and in Peru, and I have asked to be kept informed of how things progress.”

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London confirmed it was helping a British national.
