A SUPER-fit cyclist is saddling up for the ride of a lifetime – 2,000 miles from Kirkintilloch to Turkey.
Chris Barr (24) is giving up his summer holiday to take on a gruelling sponsored cycle challenge to raise funds for Yorkhill Children’s Hospital.
Chris, a personal trainer, decided he wanted to do something worthwhile during the summer instead of going on another lads holiday.
He put his idea to friends on Facebook and asked them to come up with a charity - and the majority chose Yorkhill Children’s Hospital.
Chris said: “A lot of friends have had family members who were treated at Yorkhill Children’s Hospital. The work they do there to help young children is amazing.
“I didn’t realise just how much they did until my friends responded and suggest them as a charity on Facebook.”
Armed with his bike, a couple of bags which will include a tent and maps, Chris will cycle from his home in Industry Street, Kirkintilloch, to Newcastle.
From Newcastle he will catch a ferry to Amsterdam before continuing his journey through Holland.
From Holland he will travel through Germany, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania before arriving in Turkey.
Chris will set off on his marathon bike ride on June 1. He plans to cover around 100 miles a day and is aiming to raise £1 for every mile. He said: “I’ve never done anything like this before. My friends and family think I am crazy. But I’m a keen cyclist and I would rather do this than go on another lads holiday in the summer. And Kirky to Turkey has a nice ring to it.”
