ARE you ready for the biggest and best Kirkintilloch Canal Festival yet? That’s what’s in the offing as the countdown begins to the extravaganza.
The annual festival is on its way and this year boasts the most diverse programme of events and activities ever – centred around a nautical theme.
The festival runs from Monday, August 19 – Sunday, August 25, and offers a fun-packed week of events for all the family.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The canal festival is huge for the town. It is estimated that last year it brought out 28,000 visitors and generated £389,000 for the local economy.”
Highlights include ‘Story Week’ – celebrating local history tales whilst cruising on the Forth and Clyde Canal – and ‘Get Active’ Saturday, designed to get people of all ages involved in fun goings-on around the canal. That will be followed by the evening concert and fireworks display.
The whole festival culminates in a Gala Day around the town centre and Marina on the Sunday.
The aim is to have the whole town centre alive with colour, noise and family fun.
For more information about exactly what’s on where, keep your eye on the website – www.kirkintillochcanalfestival.org – over the coming weeks.
Traders in the town are being encouraged to get into the spirit of the festival by opening over the weekend and adopting the nautical theme leading up to and during the festival week – including window dressing, themed restaurant menus and entertainment.
Councillor Geekie said: “We want local businesses and traders to be a part of the success this year and urge them to get involved. The festival team will be happy to discuss local trader participation with anyone who is interested. They can be contacted on 0300 123 4510.”
