A delighted teacher will be just feet away from star athletes after being selected for a top post at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Hilary MacGuire, a PE teacher at Lenzie Academy, will be on track chief umpire for athletics at the major sporting event this summer

The mum-of-three was one of the first picks to help stage the Commonwealth Games after building experience officiating locally, in Scotland and UK-wide.

Hilary, who has also been chosen to be a baton bearer, said: “I was absolutely gobsmacked when I got it. I could have the Olympic referee in my team.

“I was also a Games Maker at 2012 Olympic Games in the athletics equipment team.”

It was there that Hilary was just feet away from history being made when Usain Bolt anchored his Jamaican relay team to a gold medal and 4x100 world record.

And she believes the atmosphere at the Commonwealth Games will be every bit as magical.

Hilary added: “The atmosphere of the Olympics reverberated around the stadium. You couldn’t contain your emotions.

“I think we will get that again at the Commonwealth Games with it being such a huge crowd.”
