I do like to be beside the seaside ... in North Glasgow??

A WAVE of excitement is washing over people in North Glasgow as the build-up continues to one of the most popular sporting events locally.

The community’s biggest and most colourful 5K fun run – the ng5k – returns for an eighth year and this year’s theme is ‘At the Seaside’.

The event takes place in Ruchill Park on Sunday, April 21, and is free to enter.

The official start is at 10am, but it’s worth turning up early as the warm-up and fancy dress parade begin at 9.15am.

The 5k with the best party atmosphere is asking fun runners to don fancy dress to tie in with ‘At the Seaside’. There will be prizes for the best costumes.

Registration has opened – go to www.healthynorthglasgow.co.uk.

In preparation for the big event several mini-2k events have taken place at a range of parks across the North of Glasgow. Young runners are pictured at one of the 2k races in Springburn Park, with Clyde the Commonwealth Games mascot and Active Andy – the Glasgow Active Schools mascot.

The ng5k has trebled in size since 2006 to become one of the biggest events of its kind in Glasgow, with a record-breaking 2,900 fun runners taking part last April.

Why not dive right in, take the plunge and join in with your seaside costume?

The ng5k is open to people of all ages and levels of ability – you don’t need to be a serious runner to take part.

Unlike other events in the city, the ng5k is completely free. Every ng5k runner receives a free winner’s medal, bottled water, fruit and Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer. You decide how to approach the 5K route; whether running, jogging, walking or pushing the kids along in their buggy – it’s entirely up to you!
