A GRUELLING trip across Europe in an old banger sounds like hell – but Graeme Salmond reckons it will be heaven!
The Kirkintilloch man is gearing up for the trip of a lifetime.
He is taking part in the ‘Sucata Split Banger Rally’ – an exhilarating drive from Bruges in Belgium to Split, Croatia, in just four days.
The rules of the competition state it must be done in an old banger costing no more than £250!
Graeme says he’s counting down the days till the bumper trek with three buddies from the Dumbarton area at the end of May.
The 35-year-old project manager with Standard Life said: “We managed to get a 95 plate Renault Espace for exactly £230.
“It’s got 170,000 miles on the clock but we had to go down to Bradford to collect it and the break pads fell off on the way back up! We’ve done it up though and got someone to give it a respray.
“We’ve done 12,000 miles since we got it, just to make sure it runs well. One of the guys has been running it back and forth from work.”
Graeme, a former pupil of Lenzie Primary, is also a former Scottish sprint champion.
But the Banger Rally is a bit more about being the tortoise rather than the hare.
Graeme, whose team is called ‘Split or Bust’, said: “There is a competitive edge to the rally – we’ve already won awards for being the first team to raise £500 and the first team to raise £1,000 – but it is more about the taking part.”
The ‘Sucata Split Banger Rally’ tour is to help raise money for Gemin-i, a UK-based charity which helps to improve education in developing countries for approximately 60,000 children across the world.
The tour, from May 26-30, sees cars rattle their way through seven different countries – Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and the stunning Alps before (hopefully!) arriving on the stunning Dalmatian coast.
