Jennifer scoops the opposition with her ice-cream creation

A cool customer has scooped the opposition by creating a delicious ice cream flavour which combines the best of Scottish and Italian cuisine.

Nine-year-old Jennifer Campbell from Torrance discovered the recipe for success when she entered a competition as part of East Dunbartonshire Food and Drink Festival - ‘SeasonED to Taste’ - organised by the council and supported by Event Scotland.

The Baldernock Primary School pupil submitted her idea for a new ice cream flavour - Jenny’s Creation - to Ghiloni’s in Townhead, Kirkintilloch, and it was a tastebud-tingling triumph.

Around 150 entries were received, but Jennifer’s idea - vanilla, stracciatella (crispy chocolate), tablet and shortbread - was judged the best by the artisans at Ghiloni’s.

Jennifer took her inspiration for the invention from a family holiday to Lake Garda last summer.

She said: “I was very happy to win. I loved stracciatella ice-cream and thought it would be lovely combined with tablet and shortbread.”

Other entries included chocolate and beetroot and mushy peas.

Ghiloni’s co-owner Anthony Rossi said: “There was a tremendous response from local children - some very nice recipes as well as weird and wonderful ones.

“Jennifer’s idea was inspired - you can’t get any more Scottish than shortbread and stracciatella is Italian. Her recipe had all the ingredients to be a winner!

“Well done to her and many thanks to all who entered.”
