PLANS to make a temporary 40mph speed limit permanent in Bishopbriggs have been welcomed.

The reduced speed limit was brought in on sections of Kirkintilloch Road and Crosshill Road, which are the main routes through the town, in February this year.

The area takes in Strathkelvin Retail Park, the Low Moss Prison currently under construction, new pedestrian crossings and bus lay-bys.

Dominic Notarangelo, chairperson of Bishopbriggs Community Council has welcomed the move.

He said: “The orders for these roads were written quite some time ago. In situations where it’s a country road, there’s good reasons for not having speed restrictions, but building the prison changes the dynamic of the area.

“Measures to protect the safety of pedestrians is very welcome.”

The section of Kirkintilloch Road to have the 40mph speed limit is from north of Cadder Road to just past the access to Cadder Cemetery. And on Crosshill Road, the limit will apply from the Cadder Road roundabout to just north of the access to Bishopbriggs Golf Range.

Councillors agreed to progress a Speed Limit Order during last week’s development and infrastructure committee meeting.
