A DETERMINED dad-of-three is tackling a tough challenge to raise vital funds after being inspired by his friend’s courageous daughter.

Kevin McKendry (34), from Moodiesburn, is taking part in the Great Scottish Run to generate funds for the Lymphoma Association.

He was moved to take on the half-marathon by the bravery of Sophie Harkins, the daughter of Kevin’s friend, Vincent.

Sophie was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in March 2012.

She has been doing well and with the help of a new treatment – Brentuximab – is now being prepared for a stem cell transplantation which should begin in early

Kevin said: “The next few months will be tough, but crucial in her battle to beat lymphoma, however, her high spirits and positive outlook for a full recovery continues to amaze all around her.

“We would like to thank the Lymphoma Association for its support and I am delighted to be running for such a good cause as my family have past history of charity fundraising. My youngest son spent the first year of his life in Yorkhill Hospital.”

Kevin – who is married and has three children – Josh (14), seven-year-old Luke and four-year-old Maria – is looking forward to the challenge on October 6.

He added: “Lymphoma is the most common cancer in the under-30s and therefore it is crucial that young people are aware of its common signs and symptoms – persistent lumps, itching, tiredness, sweating and unexplained weight loss.

“Hearing about the work that the staff from the haematology day ward at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre did to help Sophie and how it affected her family made me decide to run for this charity to help people affected by lymphoma.”

You can support Kevin by visiting or by contacting the Lymphoma Association fundraising team on 01296 619419.

Lymphoma is the UK’s fifth most common cancer.
