Knife scare at primary school

Moves have been made to '¨reassure parents after a knife scare revolving around a pupils at a primary school.

Police were called out to Lairdsland Primary School, Kirkintilloch, by teachers after concerns from other pupils that the child had a pen knife in their possession.

The Herald was contacted by worried parents this week after the incident which 
happened on the morning of Friday, February 9.

The father of a pupil at the school said: “My friend’s daughter saw the pupil with a knife. Myself and other parents are outraged about this.

He added: “What exactly is being done to safeguard the children at the school?”

The Herald understands no knife was found by 
officers when they arrived at the school.

East Dunbartonshire Council’s Education boss Ann Davie, said Lairdsland’s headteacher followed the school’s procedures “robustly” in 
connection with the incident.

She said: “There is a clear procedure in place with police in relation to weapons in school and anti-knife crime.

“When an incident occurs, school staff work with the police to take appropriate action.

“This includes a risk assessment and measures to ensure the safety of all children.

“We don’t comment on individual incidents but we can confirm that this procedure was robustly followed by the head teacher of Lairdsland.

“We would assure parents and children we take incidents involving weapons in school very seriously and work closely with police to ensure the safety of children and staff.”

Police Area Commander, CI Gerry Corrigan said: “We work very closely with the council regarding weapons and knife crime involving young people and schools and we have an ongoing programme to raise awareness of the dangers.

“Where any such reports are received we work with the school to ensure the safety of pupils and that long-term safe guards are in place through our agreed procedures.

“I’d like to assure parents the safety of all pupils is always our priority.”
