Lanark Marches and Shifting of Standard 2010

THE tradition behind the Perambulation of the Marches is well known: a check of Lanark's boundary stones dating back to 1140 when the town became a Royal Burgh.

But there is nothing of that to see on the night.

Instead, all there is to be seen is what looks like half the town, wandering through fields and paths and having a blether.

The Cornets party does, however, disappear from time to time to check March stones!

Then, with everyone waving their birks, it's back to the Cross for the official Shifting of the Standard.

This year, the Standard was passed unsullied from last year's Lord Cornet Kenny Lean to Geoff Smith, who was sashed as the 2010 Lord Cornet in front of a packed crowd on Monday night.
