Disabled and elderly people are being assured a lift which has been out of operation for the past nine weeks at the Regent Centre in Kirkintilloch should be back in operation with the next week.
Contractor Schindler which has been responsible for the modernisation of the elevator said safety issues had delayed work which had been due to be completed more than three weeks ago.
People with mobility problems complained to the Herald about the length of time the lift had been out order.
One 79-year-old shopper said: “I can’t walk very well and you have to go out of the centre and walk up a hill to gain access to shops. It’s impossible for me.”
A spokeswoman for Schindler said: “ We are sorry some members of the public are experiencing difficulties.
“We uncovered a technical issue with a safety component, and identified the need for a full replacement part in order to restore normal and safe service.
“The estimated delivery date for the part is Saturday 30th May and replacement fitting will be conducted on the same day.”
