Carers throughout East
 Dunbartonshire are set
to benefit from a massive
National Lottery grant over the next five years.

Carers Link East Dunbartonshire have been awarded £411,625 to fund the Care—Aware—Prepare project.

Last year, the support service conducted a survey to identify the most pressing concerns of those the group support on a daily basis.

They found that many carers fret over emergency arrangements if they are suddenly unable to look after loved ones due to illness or injury.

And, following the recent lottery grant, the Carers Link will be able to help provide a back up plan when such instances arise.

Jennifer Roe, the group’s chief executive, said: “Most people don’t give a lot of thought to the future, but for carers it is an ongoing worry in the back of their mind.

“They constantly worry about what would happen if they were to get sick or injured. Who would take over? Would they know what to do?

“People often see a carer as someone looking after an older relative, but that’s not always the case.

“We have carers in their 80s and 90s looking after those in their 50s or other much younger relatives.

“It’s not just elderly carers that think this, for anyone could become sick or injured and have to spend time in hospital.

“Most carers come to us at a point of crisis. For some, they just need to know that they are not alone; that there are many others in the same situation.

“Others simply need a little break and some social interaction that they miss out on.”

She added: “We recently celebrated our ten-year anniversary and this award is just the icing on the cake.

“To know this service has been guaranteed for the next five years will come as a great comfort to the 750 carers we will support in that time.”
