The Foundation distributes just under £1 million through its Henry Duncan Awards programme to grassroots charities.

And it’s a welcome boost for the Rainbow Centre — also celebrating its 25th anniversary — with the money going towards sessional staff costs to deliver day care services to the elderly.

Mike McCafferty, of the Rainbow Care Volunteer Project, told The Extra: “The centre was set up in 1990 to combat loneliness amongst the elderly in the area and, over the years, hundreds of people have been pleased to call it their second home.

“In 2001 the centre developed a befriending project which allows care and companionship to reach those who cannot attend the centre.”

The cash boost was also welcomed by Cathcart MSP James Dornan, who praised the charity’s “great work”. He added: “Many of the Henry Duncan grants go on staff and running costs like this, meaning they are a lifeline for local charities in this tough financial climate.”

Anyone interested in attending the centre is asked to call 638 8979 — or for more info on the befriending service, call 328 9594. Volunteers for both services are also welcome.
