East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson has revealed that she is expecting her first child - and is due to give birth on Christmas Day.

The Lib Dem MP made the announcement exclusively to the Herald, two years after marrying fellow MP Duncan Hames.

Jo (33) became the youngest MP in the House of Commons when she won the East Dunbartonshire seat in 2005 at the age of just 25 - continuing to be the so-called ‘Baby of the House’ until July 2009.

Now the MP, who was recently rushed to hospital after suffering an allergic reaction to a nut, is looking forward to having a baby IN the house!

She told the Herald: “We’re absolutely delighted to make the announcement having recently got the 12-week scan.

“It was quite overwhelming to have this image of a wee life moving around.

“Duncan made sure he got a picture to carry around and show everybody.

“We’re about 13 weeks now and the due date is actually Christmas Day.

“It’s said you very rarely actually give birth on the due date, but we have already been told by friends that we’ll need to make sure that there are separate presents and maybe a different ‘official’ birthday!”

Jo will be juggling motherhood with the series of appointments she has been handed since the last General Election.

She’s currently Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Employment Relations, Consumer and Postal Affairs, as well as being a Junior Equalities Minister.

But the former Douglas Academy pupil insists that, other than during maternity leave, her political life will continue as normal.

She said: “I’m still going to be hard at work for my constituents in the coming months and am determined to put arrangements in place to provide cover when I am on maternity leave. When I return to work my constituents will be my first priority.”

And, when it comes to the question everybody asks of an expectant mother, Jo insists that they want to be kept in the dark until the big day.

She explained: “We are happy for it to be a surprise!”
