New ladies football team gets set for the big kick-off

A women’s football team has been launched in Kirkintilloch and the ladies are warming up for their first match and an exciting season ahead.

Kirkintilloch Rob Roy Ladies FC was formed from what was Hamilton Caledonian Thistle. The team has a squad of 15 ladies, with the youngest player aged 16 and the oldest is 45.

They will join the successful men’s junior side at Adamslie Park and play in the Scottish Women’s Football League (SWFL) Division 2.

Chris Clifford, a former amateur footballer and coach is the manager of Kirkintilloch Rob Roy Ladies.

He said: “At the moment we have one team, but we are looking to get an under-17 or under-15 team set up.

“We have a couple of friendlies coming up and are getting everyone fit for the league starting in March. The last time they played was October/November so they are raring to go.

“We want to get the word out that a women’s team has been set up and that we need a good support to come cheer us on and that other girls from the area know that there is a local team that they can come try out for.”

Chris, the players and the committee hope they can reach the Premier League in the coming years. Glasgow City has dominated the top position for nine years and recently made it to the quarter finals of the Champions League.

He added: “We want to get up into the divisions as high as we can go. It’s not going to be easy or quick, but we’ll try and develop the team and players to get to that level.”

The team will kick-off with a pre-season friendly against Patrick Thistle Ladies on February 9 at 1.45pm.

Women interested in joining the team can contact Chris on 07956 016036.
