New mast will tower above Kirkintilloch despite concerns

A NEW mobile phone mast has been given the green light – despite 183 letters of objection from worried householders.

At last week’s meeting of East Dunbartonshire Council’s planning board it was agreed to approve an application from Vodafone to build a 14.8m high “base station and telecommunications column” in Glasgow Road, Kirkintilloch.

Residents from the surrounding area expressed a number of concerns, including the visual impact of the base station and the health implications of locating it in a residential area.

Objectors also said that the mast would breach the spirit of the Local Plan and that other sites were available which would be more suitable.

But council officers rejected all the arguments in a detailed report which stated that other sites had been looked at, that there were no material health concerns and that it would have minimal visual impact.

It added that a previous application in Bishopbriggs, which was rejected on similar concerns, was approved on appeal.

The report stated: “In his assessment of this proposal the reporter concluded that ‘although the proposal would breach the development plan, the site chosen has been shown to be the best available in the area of search’.”

The council declined to comment further.
