RADICAL plans to ban traffic from the Cowgate area of Kirkintilloch town centre could only be two years away.

At a recent meeting of Kirkintilloch Community Council, the group was told by Bob Steedman – East Dunbartonshire Council’s development applications manager – that Cowgate WILL eventually be pedestrianised, probably in the next two years.

Making the area a pedestrian-friendly zone was first considered in the days of Strathkelvin District Council.

Campsie and Kirkintilloch North councillor Charles Kennedy said: “We thought about it years ago, but it wasn’t welcomed. I think it could have longer term benefits, but there’s not sufficient parking and until that’s sorted out it’s a no-goer.”

Thomas Glen, head of development and enterprise at East Dunbartonshire Council, stressed: “There are no plans in place to pedestrianise this area.”
