Celtic FC daft Elsie’s 100th birthday wish

Football daft great-great gran Elsie Campbell doesn’t want a telegram from the Queen to mark her 100th birthday this week.

Instead, the Kirkintilloch centenarian is pinning her hopes on a special birthday message from Celtic FC
manager Neil Lennon.

Elsie started supporting Celtic more than 70 years ago – after husband Davie’s team Rangers FC got beaten every time she went with him to a match. Grand-daughter Alison Anderson told the Herald: “My gran doesn’t want a letter from the Queen – she wants one from Neil Lennon.”

She added: “My papa was a Rangers fan and travelled all over to watch them. When he met my granny he started taking her to the games but Rangers always got beat.

“He took her to watch Kirky team Rob Roy and they got beat every time she went too! So he said she was a jinx and she wasn’t to go again. But because she liked football so much she decided to follow Celtic and started going to their games by herself!

“She always knew the Rob Roy and Rangers scores even after my papa died back in 2000.” The family said the two were “a really good fun couple who always made each other laugh.”

Described by her family as “sharp as a tack”, Elsie Liddle was born on November 8, 1920 and married Davie Campbell, a coal miner, in 1938. She has always lived in Hillhead and is still incredibly independent.
