Milngavie fish shop owner is a true High Street hero

When the chips were down a Milngavie fish shop owner proved he had plenty of 
community spirit.

Andre Alexander, of Fantoosh Fish in the village, has been recognised in a campaign to highlight East Dunbartonshire’s High Street Heroes.

The Scotland Loves Local campaign is honouring the amazing dedication and efforts to help communities through the covid pandemic.

Regional champions have been named in each of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas, alongside others highly commended, after more than 1,200 nominations were 
received for 600 people.

Andre has been highly commended for his remarkable work during the national lockdown.

Judges were told: “Andre did an amazing job with Fantoosh Fish throughout the whole of lockdown.

“He made the brave decision to spearhead pandemic response with a new business model and answer the unprecedented need for provisions that we had all been guilty of taking for granted.

“Fantoosh brand adapted to sell eggs, flour and bread. Fantoosh also diversified by implementing a very successful takeaway. The humble fish and chips option has been redefined thanks to Fantoosh setting the new standard.”

Scotland Loves Local is spearheaded by Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP) with the support of the Scottish Government to help the country’s response to the pandemic by thinking local first for shopping and service needs.

A delighted Andre said: “It’s been amazing how the local community have come together to support small businesses through this tough time.

“I’ve been glad to be able to respond and hopefully help out in a small way.

“A huge thank you to all my customers and for the thoughtful nominations. It means a lot to me, my famiy and all the staff.”

Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said: “I would like to thank these High Street Heroes for going the extra mile to help their communities. This has been a difficult year for all of us, and the only way we will get through is by sticking together, being kind, and offering help where needed.”

The East Dunbartonshire winner is Billington’s deli of Lenzie.
