Young baker’s help for homeless

A kind-hearted young Lenzie baker has been supporting homeless people in Glasgow.

Forbes Jones (8) was named Week One winner of local deli
Billington’s recent “Junior Bake Off”.

The P4 pupil at Holy Family Primary School then
decided to turn his talents to bake cakes and put together filled sandwiches for the Kindness Homeless Street Team
charity.

The charity provides food and clothing to vulnerable people living on the streets.

Mark Billington of the popular award-winning deli said: “Forbes also set up a
table in his garden where people could drop off food for the charity with no contact.

“Well done, Forbes, what a lovely thing to do.”

Billington’s are naming a young Bake Off winner each week - with an overall winner chosen at the end of lockdown by Masterchef winner Laurence Henry.

The deli supported Forbes’ efforts too with filled rolls, cakes and fruit and Forbes and his mum delivered to the charity last week.

The deli is also proving to be a lifeline for local vulnerable folk during the coronavirus pandemic, delivering special care boxes. You can receive one on the day from Mark and his team, if ordered by 2pm from Monday to Saturday.

Meanwhile, one of Kindness Homeless Street Team’s most active supporters, Kirkintilloch Jonathan Lockhart has also been praised for his efforts during the Covid-19 outbreak.

In an email to the Herald, local resident Rosina Dickson said: “I‘d like to nominate a local guy called Jonathan Lockhart as a local hero.

“He became involved with a community group called Kindness Homeless Street Team Glasgow about four months ago. He initially helped them out by providing food for the group but over the following months he became more involved and was out once every two weeks with the team pounding the streets of Glasgow, in all weather, to provide food and clothing to vulnerable people living in the streets.

“When the Covid-19 crisis hit he really stepped up.

“He took to social media to post videos and really raise awareness of the harsh realities of supporting vulnerable homeless people and their plight. These videos have been shared far and wide and have helped raise £34,000 via a go fund me page. This money will allow the team to buy a van so they can get more stuff out to the people that need it.

“He contacted local businesses and secured hot food on a daily basis so people get a hot meal. He is out in Glasgow every night. All this while he holds down a full time job. Jonathan is one of thee most selfless people I have met.”
