A small family town centre bakery has been shortlisted for an award designed to recognise the country’s finest Scotch pies.
More than 100 of Scotland’s top butchers and bakers entered the 16th World Scotch Pie Championships.
Now a panel of industry experts and Bay City Roller Les McKeown have trimmed the entries down to a final six - which includes Peter’s Bakery, based in Kirkintilloch’s Merkland Drive.
The shortlist was arrived at after a team of 50 judges recently carried out tastings at Dunfermline’s Carnegie Conference Centre.
It’s the second time the business, owned by local man Peter McDonald, has been up for the prize.
Last year he was delighted to win the bronze medal and this year wants to do better still.
He told the Herald: “Last year was amazing. After we were in the Kirkintilloch Herald everybody really got behind us and were coming into the shop to congratulate us.
“It’s a great achievement to be nominated again and is a morale-booster for the staff.
“We’re really hoping to do even better this year and have made sure to keep our standards as high as possible.
“People from all over entered the competition - from the Highlands and Islands to the Borders, so for a small Kirkintilloch bakery to do so well is amazing.
“We have a long family tradition as bakers - including my father and brother.
“The recipe has been handed down and is now a long-standing favourite of the people of Kirkintilloch.”
The prize will be presented at a ceremony at the Westerwood Hotel on January 14.
In addition to Scotch pies, contestants entered their best sausage rolls, bridies, speciality savouries, Scottish football pies, savouries and apple pies.
Head judge Robert Ross said: “Scotland is lucky to be home to some of the world’s most experienced and talented bakers and butchers.
“The World Scotch Pie Championship provides an opportunity for Scotland’s finest to showcase their skill. The competition, now in its sixteenth year, aims specifically to highlight those entrants that create world-class artisan products.”
