Carlaw hails voter engagement

West of Scotland MSP and East Renfrewshire resident Jackson Carlaw believes democracy was the ultimate winner of last week’s referendum.

Speaking of voter engagement, he said:“Once again I am hugely impressed by the determination shown by local people to participate in the democratic process. East Renfrewshire had the highest turnout anywhere in the UK in the 2011 AV referendum and regularly has the highest mainland turnout in Scottish and General Elections.

“However, by any standard the turnout of over 90% achieved is exceptional. And local people spoke clearly here just as they did across Scotland, voting emphatically to remain in the UK.”

The deputy leader of the Scottish Conservative’s added: “Above everything, it was the participation of first time voters which caught my attention. In the week of the referendum I took part in a final debate at Mearns Castle High School. Students were well informed, totally engaged and overwhelmingly supportive of the UK. Judged by East Renfrewshire’s youth, Scotland has a truly great future ahead.”
