Protest at flight path changes over Bearsden

An online petition against proposed changes to flightpaths over a Bearsden area has collected almost 200 signatures within a matter of days.

Resident Sheena MacKenzie set up the petition to “Stop the new take-off flight path over south Bearsden” after Glasgow airport launched a public consultation on plans to change its flight paths for the first time in decades.

Local people are being urged to have their say.

Sheena has set up the petition because of her concerns over noise pollution, air quality and a detrimental affect on local properties.

She posted on a public social media site: “The waypoint is St Germains Loch. The noise levels over the affected area will be much higher than under the current flight path due to the aircraft turning.”

The petition claims: “This proposal is partly being put in place to allow Glasgow airport to expand over time, which would mean an increase in the number and size of flights.

“The areas directly affected are Canniesburn Road, just north of Canniesburn Toll and Kessington/Killermont.

“Even if you are not from this area, you might consider signing this petition, to avoid a precedent of changing a flightpath to significantly increase noise pollution in a dense residential area.”

The petition added: “South Bearsden is not currently under the flightpath, and this fact is reflected in the house prices.

“Introducing significant noise pollution to this area would inevitably lead to a decrease in house prices.”

Glasgow airport launched a 13-week consultation which began in January, stating that the old flight paths are ‘no longer fit for purpose’.

A consultation event is
being held at Bearsden Community Hub at Drymen Road, on Friday, March 16 from 10am to 7pm. Local MSPs are urging people to have their say on “this very important issue”.

Airport bosses say they will explain the proposed changes at the event and how they will affect residents.

Mark Johnston, operations director at Glasgow Airport, said: “The flight paths used at Glasgow Airport have not changed in decades and,are simply no longer fit for purpose.

“We are committed to growing the airport responsibly. However, it is important communities are fully involved in this modernisation process and we will only make these changes once we have considered their views.”
