Rats invade town hall?

CONCERNS have been raised that a derelict building has become a magnet for vermin.

Kirkintilloch Town Hall was closed by East Dunbartonshire Council in July 2004 and since then the building has been allowed to fall into a state of disrepair.

Kirkintilloch Town Hall Preservation Trust has worked tirelessly to get the hall refurbished, but so far has been unable to raise the required funds to return the building to its former glory.

Now a Herald reader says she believes the hall could be infested with rats. She said: "I was walking along Union Street one morning last week and had my grandchild with me in the buggy.

"When I looked up at the windows on the side of the town hall I could see something moving inside. Then I realised there were rats running along the window ledge. There seemed to be lots of them and it was really disgusting. I'd be worried that they might be scurrying around the town centre at night.

"Something needs to be done before the problem gets worse."

A council spokesperson said: "The council inspects the town hall weekly and has seen no evidence of rats. The hall doesn't contain any food to attract vermin.

"Environmental Health will undertake a thorough search of the building."
