East Dunbartonshire came a creditable joint third in the Scottish final of the Young Consumers of the Year competition.
The four-strong team of savvy S5/6 pupils from Kirkintilloch High were East Dunbartonshire’s first ever representatives at the competition and performed well against stiff opposition at the Scottish Parliament.
The switched-on foursome reached the final by beating Turnbull High School in the local heat at the start of the year, organised by the council’s trading standards team.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie, who went to Edinburgh to support the team, said: “When I watched the local heat I was impressed at the level of knowledge displayed by the young people but at the final they took it up a notch. To come in joint third at the first time of asking was a wonderful achievement and they should be very proud of themselves.”
Quiz topics included money and finance, food, health and wellbeing, safety and the environment and consumer affairs.
Eddie Muir, headteacher of Kirkintilloch High School, said: “We are extremely proud of our pupils who represented us so creditably in the final of the Young Consumers of the Year competition.
“It was such a positive experience for them and one which will no doubt serve them well in their future careers.”
