Politicians today paid tribute to former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy, whose sudden death was announced today (Tuesday).
Just a few weeks ago he was campaigning in East Dunbartonshire to try to secure the re-election of Jo Swinson. He also lost his own seat - which he had held since the age of 23 - at the general election on May 7.
Willie Rennie, leader of the Liberal Democrats in Scotland, said today: “With that cheeky smile, Highland voice and a few simple words, Charles Kennedy captured the political hearts of the nation.
“Charles’ wise counsel and gentle encouragement is something I especially valued. I will miss him so much.”
John Nicolson, SNP MP for East Dunbartonshire, “Very sad to hear about Charles Kennedy. I heard him first as a young student and was inspired by his wit and charisma.”
Jo Swinson added: “Devastated by news of Charles Kennedy: much-loved in the Lib Dem family and far beyond; sharp-witted yet kind, brave, champion of liberalism.”
