Uncertain future for college campus in Kirkintilloch

COLLEGE chiefs say it’s “too early to say” whether a merger could threaten the future of their East Dunbartonshire campus.

Cumbernauld College, which operates a campus in Kirkintilloch’s Southbank Marina, is set to merge with Motherwell

College in August - following successful negotiations between the boards of the two institutions.

The new college, created in line with the Scottish Government’s Education Reform Agenda, would deliver almost two-thirds of further education in Lanarkshire.

Keith Fulton, chairman of the board of management at Cumbernauld College, said that the merger would be good news for students.

He said: “Learners are at the centre of all we do and both organisations have a history of successful partnership working on a range of projects. We would anticipate that this will be further enhanced through the proposed merger.

“All due processes will be put in place to ensure full consultation with stakeholders, with particular consideration given to learners and staff.

“Motherwell College and Cumbernauld College have a long established working relationship and share a similar educational philosophy and culture, making a merger a logical extension of our current federal arrangements.”

But a spokesperson for Motherwell College could not guarantee that the East Dunbartonshire Campus of Further and Higher Education would continue to be backed by the merged organisation.

The spokesperson said: “It’s too early to say what the impact might be, however we can guarantee that learners will not be disadvantaged.”
