A community gym that was set up just seven months ago has already become a massive success story thanks to a group of dedicated villagers.

Established in February this year, Milton of Campsie Community Gym’s swift expansion has been remarkable.

What started as an idea from a young volunteer at Milton of Campsie Railway station restoration project is now a thriving twice weekly club.

Donations of gym equipment and financial support have been greatly received from Milton of Campsie Community Council, Scotmid and many local residents.

The gym classes run weekly in Milton of Campsie Village hall on Saturday mornings from 9.30-10.30am, Sundays from 6.30-7pm for primary children and Sundays from 7-8pm for secondary school pupils and adults.

The classes are run by a dedicated team of volunteers and trainers made up of six adults and four juniors, with entry fees just £2 for adults, £1 for children and free for the unemployed.

It’s become so successful that people are travelling from Lennoxtown and Kirkintilloch to join in and organisers have big ambitions.

A spokesperson for the gym said: “Our progress has been truly inspiring. We are showing that there is a very strong need for affordable community fitness classes not only in Milton of Campsie but also in Lennoxtown and beyond.

“Many people have commented that getting to Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre can be quite a challenge. We are committed to welcoming as many people as possible of all ages and backgrounds to our classes.

“We are also looking for support in the form of more volunteers to help us strengthen our classes and campaign, we really need committed individuals to step forward and join us hand in hand.

“It is also incredibly important to send out a very clear, strong and positive message that our main objective is the creation of a fully welcoming, affordable and purposeful gym and sports facility within Milton of Campsie giving people employment and fitness opportunities - we have identified two possible areas within the village and our next aim is to meet with East Dunbartonshire Council’s regeneration team to positively discuss potential opportunities.”
