PLANS are being taken forward to transform Kirkintilloch town centre.

Last year East Dunbartonshire Council announced it would develop a masterplan for the area.

Special workshops were held and more than 1,000 questionnaires were completed as part of a consultation to gather views from residents, businesses and community groups.

More car parking, a civic space for events and concerts, a face-lift for buildings and pedestrian-friendly streets were just some of the suggestions put forward during the consultation.

Thomas Glen, head of development and enterprise, said: “The masterplan team are now undertaking a review of the information gathered through the consultation and technical analysis of the town centre. Together this work will be used to develop options for the draft masterplan.

“Once prepared the draft options will be subject to necessary council committee approvals and further local stakeholder consultation.

“It is envisaged this will work be undertaken over the summer of 2012. Details of the next stage of consultation are still to be finalised and will be published and advertised in due course.”
