ANGRY residents have helped to stop work at a former coal mine in Kirkintilloch ... for the time being at least.

East Dunbartonshire Council has served a Temporary Stop Notice on the owner of the Waterside bing after it was found that materials were being removed without permission.

Thomas Glen, head of development and enterprise at the council, said: “Following complaints received about the removal of material from mineral working deposits from the Waterside bing, an enforcement officer carried out a site visit and confirmed that unauthorised work was being carried out and as a result served a Temporary Stop Notice on July 8.

“The notice requires the unauthorised activities to be halted with immediate effect and is in force for 28 days.”

Mr Glen added: “The owner has previously been advised that a planning consent is required to carry out the removal of materials.

“We are happy to work with the owner to assist in submitting the necessary application and supporting information.”
