These ten cities in the UK are leading a surge in Tinder activity among people looking for love over the last year.

The app, launched in 2012, shows users profiles of singles within a customisable distance of them. Users can match with each other and start chatting if they both “swipe right” on each other’s profiles.

According to Tinder, a ‘swipe surge’ is a time when activity on the app naturally surges, and a person’s “match-making potential is increased by 250 per cent”.

During a ‘swipe surge’, developers claim users can “spark up a new convo with someone 33 per cent faster.

The biggest growth in ‘swipe surges’ in 2019 happened in these ten UK cities:

The app’s developers think this is down to an increase in the number of people looking for love in their local area, rather than further afield.

The language of love

Tinder also analysed tens of thousands of profiles on the app, looking for words that appeared in their bios time and time again.

Developers think that by taking notice of the most common words and phrases used in people’s profiles, they can understand how young people’s relationship priorities are changing.

These are the top ten most common words used in bios in 2019:

While far from being a scientific indicator, developers believe the fact that “real” topped the list alongside “connection” shows that users are looking for authenticity from their partner above everything else.
