Ban increased but late appeal dismissed

The Department of Player Safety (DOPS) has increased one player’s suspension and upgraded one penalty – but rejected an appeal from Fife Flyers, stating the club missed the deadline for submissions.

The action came after the clubs met in back to back matches.

On Saturday, Clan’s NHL skater, Jay Rosehill, was called for charging after thundering into Flyers’ forward Justin Fox.

The two-minute minor has now been upgraded to a five plus game which will stay on his record.

Flyers were angry at Rosehill’s actions and submitted video footage of the hit.

DOPS decided that Rosehill ‘‘travelled a significant distance at speed and then jumped into the check.’’

It said Rosehill ‘‘recklessly endangered his opponent’’ and changed the game sheet to record a five-plus-game penalty rather than a two-minute minor.

Rosehill was also at the centre of a flashpoint in the opening period of Sunday’s return game as he cross-checked defenceman James Isaacs, and then checked him again as the Fifer lay on the ice in front of the net.

He was thrown out on a five-plus-game penalty, and the Press understands Fife sought a review.

DOPs confirmed an additional request had been made – one in which the original penalty did not require an automatic review – but ruled the move out of order because the club missed the deadline of 6.00p.m. on Monday to make its submission.

The panel also reviewed Callum Boyd’s slew-footing penalty in Sunday’s game and handed him an extra one match ban.

The Clan skater was given a match penalty for slew-footing Kyle Haines.

That carries an automatic one-game ban, which has been increased to two – Clan can appeal the additional punishment

Slew footing is when a player kicks an opponent’s foot or skate from behind, or pulls him backwards while taking the feet from under him, and is considered dangerous and reckless by the sport.

DOPS said the match penalty was the correct call but added a second game suspension.

DOPS has yet to give a decision on an automatic review of the 2+10 penalty handed to Flyers’ Justin Fox for checking from behind during Saturday’s game.
