Clubs' runners and walkers on the right road

Success has come to members of two Kirkintilloch-based athletics clubs - Scotia Race Walking Club and Kirkie Mile Crunchers - over recent weeks.

Kirkie Mile Crunchers runner Patricia Shovlin took part in the recent Clydebank 10k event and completed the course in a time of 51 minutes 12 seconds, setting a new personal best for the distance.

Then, in Edinburgh over the half marathon and marathon, three athletes from the Mile Crunchers took their places on the starting line.

Melanie Munro set out at a good pace in the half marathon and was rewarded when she finished in a time of one hour 57 minutes 26 seconds, taking no fewer than 14 minutes off her previous best time.

And in the marathon the club had another two athletes who finished in excellent times.

Cathy MacNab finished in 4 hours 10 minutes while Elizabeth Hood crossed the line in 4 hours 43 minutes.

Meanwhile just over the border at Kirkby Fleetham Scotia RWC members Agnes Ellis, Bill McFadden, and Andrew Fraser competed in the Holt Bradford Cup 50k.

The whole events from children to adults’ races and saw up to 70 compete at all distances in race walking competition.

Andrew Fraser completed 25k in 2 hours 48 minutes 56 seconds, while Agnes Ellis completed her first 35k race in 4 hours 11 minutes 8 seconds, taking second place in the women’s race.

And Bill McFadden, taking part in his first 50K race walk, completed the course strongly and crossed the line in a time of 5 hours 28 minutes 54 seconds.

Overall Scotia race walking club had put up a fantastic effort and was denied the first team prize by just a single point.

The Scotia team were assisted by Brian Ellis who kept the team hydrated and fed, as well as helping other clubs with their refuelling.

Scotia are now looking at the British Masters 5k Championship at Horwich where they are looking at Andrew, Agnes, Bill, John Softley, and David Mushet completing the team and aiming for honours.
